How to use the attendance calculator
- Enter the total classes held so far and the number you attended. You'll find both on your college portal or attendance register.
- Choose your required attendance – 75% is the most common rule in Indian colleges and schools, but some use 60%, 65% or 80%.
- The calculator shows your current percentage and either how many more classes you can miss safely, or how many classes in a row you must attend to reach the target.
- Use Plan ahead to test a scenario, like "20 more lectures this month and I'll attend 18 of them".
The formulas
Attendance percentage: Attended ÷ Total held × 100. For example, 45 out of 70 classes = 64.3%.
Classes needed to reach 75%: if you attend every class from now on, you need 3 × Total − 4 × Attended more classes. With 45 out of 70, that's 3 × 70 − 4 × 45 = 30 classes in a row. (For any target T%, the general formula is (T × Total − 100 × Attended) ÷ (100 − T), rounded up.)
Classes you can miss at 75%: Attended ÷ 0.75 − Total, rounded down. With 90 out of 100 (90%), you could miss 20 more classes and still be at exactly 75%.
Why the 75% rule matters
Many universities, engineering and medical colleges, and school boards require a minimum attendance – very often 75% – to sit for final exams. Falling short can mean being "detained", needing a condonation (usually only for genuine medical or other reasons, with documents), or losing internal marks. Rules differ between institutions, and some count each subject or lab separately, so check your own college's regulations.
Tips for staying above the line
- Check subject-wise attendance. Your overall figure can look fine while one subject is below 75%.
- Don't spend your buffer early. Illness and emergencies happen late in the semester too.
- Keep medical certificates for absences due to illness – many colleges consider them for condonation.
- Recover early. The fewer classes that have been held, the faster each attended class raises your percentage.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate my attendance percentage?
Divide the classes you attended by the total classes held and multiply by 100. For example, 60 out of 80 classes is 75%.
How many classes do I need to attend to reach 75%?
If you attend every class from now on, you need 3 × total classes held − 4 × classes attended. For 45 out of 70, that is 30 classes.
How many classes can I skip and stay at 75%?
Divide the classes you attended by 0.75 and subtract the total held, then round down. For 90 out of 100, you can miss 20 more classes.
Do labs count separately from lectures?
At many colleges, yes. Check your college rules and calculate each subject or lab separately if needed.
