How WPM is calculated
Typing tests measure speed in words per minute (WPM). Because real words have different lengths, the standard rule counts every 5 characters (including spaces) as one "word". This test counts only the characters you typed correctly, divides by 5, and then divides by the minutes that passed. So if you typed 250 correct characters in 1 minute, your speed is 50 WPM.
Accuracy is the percentage of typed characters that match the text. A fast score with low accuracy is not very useful, so aim for 95% accuracy or higher before trying to go faster.
What is a good typing speed?
| WPM | Level |
|---|---|
| Below 25 | Beginner – still looking at the keyboard |
| 25 – 40 | Average – most people type in this range |
| 40 – 60 | Good – comfortable for office and data-entry work |
| 60 – 80 | Fast – great for professional typing jobs |
| 80+ | Excellent – top-level touch typist |
Many government typing tests in India (such as SSC CHSL, SSC CGL and court clerk exams) ask for around 35 WPM in English or 30 WPM in Hindi. Always check the official notice for your exam, because the rules for counting mistakes can differ.
Tips to type faster
- Learn touch typing. Keep your fingers on the home row (ASDF and JKL;) and use all ten fingers.
- Don't look at the keyboard. It feels slow at first, but it is the only way to become really fast.
- Accuracy first, speed second. Fixing mistakes costs more time than typing a little slower.
- Practise for 10 minutes a day. Short daily practice works better than one long session a week.
- Sit properly. Keep your wrists straight and your screen at eye level.
Frequently asked questions
Is this typing test free?
Yes. The test is completely free, needs no sign-up, and works in any modern browser on computers, tablets and phones.
Should I take the 1-minute or 5-minute test?
The 1-minute test is good for a quick check. The 5-minute test gives a more accurate result because one or two mistakes affect it less, and it also measures how well you keep your speed up.
Do mistakes reduce my WPM?
Yes. Only correctly typed characters are counted, so every mistake lowers your WPM. If you fix a mistake with Backspace, the corrected letter counts again.
Can I use this test on my phone?
Yes, it works with a phone keyboard. Scores on phones are usually lower than on a physical keyboard, so compare phone results with other phone results.
Is my score saved?
Your best score for each duration is saved only in your own browser, so you can see if you are improving. We do not upload your typing.
