How to convert CGPA to percentage

CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is an average of your grade points, usually on a 10-point scale. Because many job forms, scholarship applications and admission portals still ask for a percentage, you often need to convert it. There is no single national formula – the right one depends on your board or university – so this calculator offers the most common ones.

CBSE formula: CGPA × 9.5

CBSE advised multiplying CGPA by 9.5 to get an indicative percentage. The 9.5 factor came from comparing students' grade points with their actual marks over several years. Example: a CGPA of 8.4 × 9.5 = 79.8%. The same factor can be used for a single subject: a grade point of 9 × 9.5 = 85.5%.

AICTE / engineering formula: (CGPA − 0.75) × 10

AICTE's examination reform guidelines suggest this conversion for technical courses on a 10-point scale, and many engineering universities (including VTU) use it. Example: (8.4 − 0.75) × 10 = 76.5%.

Simple formula: CGPA × 10

Some colleges simply multiply by 10, so 8.4 becomes 84%. Others publish their own tables or formulas. Always check your university's official rule – it is usually printed on the back of your marksheet or in the academic regulations. If it gives a different multiplier, choose "Custom multiplier".

How to calculate CGPA from SGPA

SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) is your average for one semester. Your CGPA combines all semesters. If every semester has the same number of credits, the CGPA is the simple average of the SGPAs. If the credits differ, use a weighted average:

CGPA = (SGPA₁ × Credits₁ + SGPA₂ × Credits₂ + …) ÷ (Credits₁ + Credits₂ + …)

Example: semester 1 SGPA 8.0 with 20 credits, semester 2 SGPA 9.0 with 25 credits. CGPA = (160 + 225) ÷ 45 = 8.56. A simple average would give 8.5, which slightly underweights the heavier semester.
