Teachers, colleges and employers mix pages, words and minutes all the time – and it is surprisingly hard to switch between them in your head. For a typed page on A4 or Letter paper with normal margins and a 12-point font like Times New Roman:

Why the number changes
- Font: fonts are different widths. At the same size, Arial and Calibri fit slightly fewer or more words than Times New Roman, and wide fonts like Verdana fit noticeably fewer.
- Font size: 11-point fits more than 12-point; 14-point fits much less.
- Line spacing: 1.5 spacing fits about a third fewer words than single spacing; double spacing about half.
- Margins: wider margins mean shorter lines and fewer words.
- Paragraphs and headings: every new paragraph leaves a partly empty line; headings take extra space.
- Language: average word length differs between languages. English words average about 5 letters; Hindi text often has fewer, longer words per line because of matras and conjunct letters.
So if a teacher says "2 pages", it is always worth asking: typed or handwritten, and what spacing?
Words to speaking time
For speeches, presentations and videos, time matters more than pages. A comfortable speaking pace is around 120–150 words per minute; nervous speakers often go faster.

Tips for writing to a word limit
If you need to cut words
- Remove filler: "very", "really", "actually", "basically", "in order to" (use "to").
- Replace phrases with single words: "due to the fact that" → "because"; "at this point in time" → "now".
- Cut repeated ideas. If two sentences say the same thing, keep the stronger one.
- Check your most-used words in the word counter and vary or remove repeats.
If you need to add words
- Add a specific example, number or short quote to support each main point.
- Explain why or how, not just what.
- Add a short conclusion that links back to the question – don't pad with repetition.
Exam answers
In board exams and competitive exams, answers often come with limits like "in about 50 words" or "in 100–120 words". Examiners usually allow some flexibility, but going far over wastes time you need for other questions. Practise by writing answers and counting the words afterwards – after a few tries you will know roughly how many lines of your handwriting make 50 or 100 words.
