How to use the number to words converter

  1. Type the number or amount. You can include commas, spaces or the ₹ sign – they're ignored. Add up to two decimal places for paise, like 4999.50.
  2. Keep Cheque format on to get "Rupees … Only", the way amounts are written on cheques, receipts and invoices. Turn it off for plain number words.
  3. Pick the letter case you need, then press Copy.

Below the words, you'll also see the number written with Indian commas (12,34,567) and international commas (1,234,567).

The Indian number system

India groups digits differently from most of the world. After the first three digits (hundreds), digits are grouped in twos:

FigureIndian wordsInternational words
1,00,000One LakhOne Hundred Thousand
10,00,000Ten LakhOne Million
1,00,00,000One CroreTen Million
10,00,00,000Ten CroreOne Hundred Million
1,00,00,00,000One Hundred CroreOne Billion

So 1 lakh = 100 thousand, 10 lakh = 1 million, and 1 crore = 10 million. Larger amounts are usually written as "Hundred Crore", "Thousand Crore" or "Lakh Crore" – which is why government budgets are often quoted in lakh crore.
